Lexy

I got Lexy at a very turbulent time in my life. I had just had my daughter and was living on very limited income. My ex-sister in law got her for me from her son's fathers family. She was a very small striped tabby with a weepy eye. She lived with us in three different homes. While I was living with my ex-sister in law Lexy got along very well with the other pets in the house. She loved playing with all the kids too (there were 3 boys and my infant daughter). She bonded very closely with Jonathan and became basically his cat. When I moved into my own apartment it took her some time to adjust to the new enviroment. There were a couple times when she snuck out the door and I'd have to chase her down the stairs. Then there was one time when I found her downstairs mating with one of the neighborhood strays.

It didnt take too long to notice her tummy getting bigger, she was obviously pregnant. I found it rather exciting as I had never had a pet have babies. Jonathan was just thrilled with the concept of having kittens. She was such a petite cat and her stomach got so big she could barely walk. Then one night as I was going to bed she started howling and running in circles. I knew this had to be baby day, so I went and got several towels and laid them out on the floor for her. It took her almost all night to birth three live kittens and a stillborn. I called my friend in the middle of the night because I had no idea what to do with the stillborn. Lexy kept trying to lick it to get it to liven up, but it was obviously gone, it had not developed right. I finally took it away from her and disposed of it so she would pay attention to her live kittens. I got a box out and moved the kittens and momma into the kitchen so they could have some privacy and do their own thing. When Jonathan woke up the next morning he was ready to hold the kittens and play with them It was hard convincing a toddler that he had to let the kittens be untill they were older.

When the kittens were about 6 weeks old, they began meowing very loudly, and Lexy was no where to be found. I was very scared as she was a very young mother herself and I thought she had abandoned the litter. I ended up running to the pet store and getting kitten formula and feeding the babies every few hours. I had to do this for two days as we still were unable to find Lexy. On the second day I was walking around the apartment calling Lexy thinking maybe she got shut in a closet or cupboard or something. Finally I heard a faint meow... and as I followed it I figured out it was coming from outside. I went outside and around to the back of the apartment where I found her, stuck in a bush. She had fallen out of my kitchen window and was stuck in the bush. I felt so bad for her, being stuck there for two days, but was very relieved to have the momma back for the kittens.

The kittens grew quite rapidly, and the time came to find homes for them. I was very picky on where they went, so it took some time to find homes. I did it all very slowly too, just one kitten at a time, so Lexy would have time to adjust to the babies being gone. It didn't work. She became very mean after her kittens were gone, and she went to the bathroom all over the house. I brought Bailey home not too long after the kittens were gone, hoping that some companionship would help her calm down. That didn't work either. I finally had to get rid of her as she was tearing up the house and being very mean to the kids, which was very unlike the Lexy that I had known her to be. Having kittens changed our kitty for the worst. I have gotten all my cats since then fixed, as I wont go through having something like that happen to my cats ever again.
