The stars so bright in the darkness
crackling embers stir my mind
the rushing water soothes my tension
from the news that I've heard today

My friend says she wants to bleed
It purges the body of impurities
to rid yourself of what gives life
with the edge of a knife

The night is black like her thoughts
I sit here with tears welling
trying to find another way
for her to let go of her emotions

If I were there to show you I care
I know there wouldn't be anymore wounds you'd cause
as my tears stain the page for knowing that I can not go
the best I can do is write this poem.

These words could never show the true emotion that I have
there aren't words that can describe how I feel
so this might not mean as much
as if you could feel my thoughts

My breathing is deep and my eyes are red
the fire dying as I stare
wondering if your all right
but my hands are no longer able to write.

A dear friend of mine wrote the above poem, when I was in a very unstable state and in dire need of help. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who cared enough about me to see to it that I got the help that I needed.

Self-Injury is something that takes place all to often unnoticed. Statistics show that millions of people are self injurers. Many times they are more commonly refered to as "cutters". But self-injury takes for in many other ways than just cutting, but I will get into more detail about that later. To some people, they cant fathom the thought of wanting to hurt themselves therefore it is very difficult for the public to understand and/or help most of the time. Often times the only thing a loved one of a person who self-injures can do is say "here, hurt me not you, will that help?". Unfortunatley the answer to that question is no, it wont help. Self-injury goes much farther than the physical wounds on the surface of a body. As with many illnesses or problems, it often times takes a person who has lived through it, to understand or sympathize with it. There are programs and books that will help both the injurer and their family and friends. I will mention some later on.

The belief that self injurers are only cutters is a very misled belief. Many would be amazed at all the ways one can hurt themselves. Because this page may be seen by those who do self injure, I will only name a few so as to not give anyone more ideas on how to do so. People go from cutting and burning, to starving themselfs to even putting then in situations with abusive people, just so they will get hurt.

If you do Self Injure in any way;

You are not alone, and there is help

You can call 1-800-DONT CUT

As a self-injurer I know how hard the battle is to not do it. I have fought it for several years. We all have our bad days, but please, always remember that there is help out there. There are programs such as the S.A.F.E. program that is specifically for people who self injure. There are many books you can read that can help you to at least understand why you are doing the things you do. Personally, I found the book Bodily Harm By Karen Contiero and Wendy Lader, PH.D. the directors of the S.A.F.E. program very helpful to me. The most important thing, I think, is to know that your not alone in your battle, and their are those willing to help you through it. If you are reading this page, and would like someone to talk to, PLEASE... feel free to e-mail me and I will get back to you quickly. I know how hard the fight can be... because I still have not won the battle.
